Accessing Cecil County Civil Court Records Online

The Maryland Judiciary Case Search is the main tool for looking up civil court records in Cecil County. It is free to use and covers all 24 Maryland jurisdictions. The database is updated nightly. You can search by party name or case number. Since December 2021, searches default to exact name matches. Add a percent sign (%) after the last name to run a partial match when you are not sure of the exact spelling.

Cecil County civil records in the online system go back to June 3, 1998. Cases filed before that date are not in the digital database. You would need to contact the clerk's office directly to locate older files. Case Search shows docket entries and case summaries. It does not provide access to document images. If you need to see the actual filings, you have to visit the courthouse in Elkton or send a written request.

Getting Copies of Civil Court Records in Cecil County

Copies of civil court records in Cecil County cost $0.50 per page for regular copies. Certified copies are $5.50 each. That includes both the certification fee and the copy cost. Payments can be made in cash in the office, by money order, or by credit card using Visa, Mastercard, or Discover. Personal checks are not accepted.

To get copies by mail, write to the Civil Department at 129 East Main Street, Elkton, MD 21921. Include the names of both parties involved, the date or year of the case, the case number if you have it, your return address, and your phone number or email. Enclose payment in the form of a money order since personal checks are not accepted by mail either. You can also email cecilcivil@mdcourts.gov to ask about specific documents before sending a formal request.

Divorce decrees specifically cost $5.50 each. The court has a form called the Request for Certified Copy of Divorce Decree. You will need both parties' names as they appeared at the time of divorce, plus the date or year and the case number if you know it.

Cecil County has an unusually deep set of marriage records. The court holds marriage records going back to 1777, which makes it a valuable resource for genealogical research. For current marriage license copies, the process is straightforward. Go to the clerk's office in person or send a written request. The fee is $5.50 for a certified copy. Payment must be cash, money order, or credit card.

Cecil County also records foreign marriages. If one party to a marriage performed in another country is a Cecil County citizen, the clerk can record that marriage here. There is no fee for this service. If the original document is not in English, a certified translation must be provided along with the original.
