Which Court Handles Silver Spring Civil Records

Silver Spring is an unincorporated community. It is not a city with its own government or court system. All civil court filings for Silver Spring residents and businesses go through Montgomery County courts. The county has two court levels that handle civil matters.

Montgomery County Circuit Court, located in Rockville about six miles from central Silver Spring, handles the larger civil cases. This includes contract disputes, personal injury suits, civil judgments, foreclosures, equity cases, and appeals from the District Court. The Circuit Court clerk's office is in the North Tower at 50 Maryland Avenue. Central Files is on the first floor in Room 1100. This is where you go to view case files in person.

The District Court has a location right in Silver Spring at the L. Leonard Ruben District Court Building, 8552 2nd Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20910. You can reach that office at 301-563-8500. The District Court handles smaller civil disputes, including small claims (up to $5,000), landlord-tenant cases, peace orders, and some contract claims. If your case involves a smaller dollar amount or a landlord-tenant issue, the Silver Spring District Court location is likely where the record lives.

Note: Silver Spring cases filed at District Court may appear in Case Search with Silver Spring listed as the filing location, not Rockville.

Searching Silver Spring Civil Court Records Online

The Maryland Judiciary Case Search tool at casesearch.courts.state.md.us is free and open to the public. It covers both Circuit Court and District Court records statewide, including cases from the courts that serve Silver Spring.

When you search, the default setting looks for an exact name match. If you are not sure of the full legal name used in the filing, add a percent sign (%) at the end of the last name to run a partial match search. This feature was added in December 2021 and makes it easier to find cases when the name spelling is uncertain. You can also search by case number if you have it.

Case Search shows basic case information: party names, case type, filing date, case status, and scheduled hearing dates. It does not show the full text of filings, exhibits, or sealed documents. Montgomery County civil records go back to 1978, which is the earliest start date for any county in Maryland. That means Silver Spring cases from the late 1970s onward may be searchable. Older records may require an in-person visit or a written request to the clerk's office.

Some records are not available online or in person. Adoption records, juvenile records, mental health records, and expunged or sealed cases are not public. Financial statements and certain income records are also restricted. If a case was expunged, it will not appear in Case Search results.

Note: Case Search shows case summaries only. Visit the clerk's office in Rockville to view the full file with all documents and filings.
