Garrett County Overview
How to Search Garrett County Civil Court Records
The fastest way to look up Garrett County civil court records is through the Maryland Judiciary Case Search portal. This free tool covers all Maryland courts and is updated each night with new activity. You can search by party name, case number, or attorney. For civil cases in Garrett County, the online index goes back to November 3, 1997, so cases filed before that date will not appear in search results and must be requested directly from the clerk's office.
When you enter a name in Case Search, the system defaults to an exact match. If you are not sure of the exact spelling, add a percent sign (%) at the end of the last name to do a partial search. For example, searching "Shar%" will return results for Sharp, Sharpe, and similar names. This feature is useful when records have been entered with spelling variations. Keep in mind that Case Search returns case summaries only. You cannot view full document images through the portal. If you need the actual filed documents, you will need to contact the Garrett County Circuit Court clerk directly or visit the courthouse in Oakland.
A new Maryland Courts portal launched on March 14, 2026, so you may notice some interface changes if you have used Case Search before. The core search functions remain the same.

Copying and Obtaining Garrett County Court Records
If you want copies of civil court records from Garrett County, you have a few options. The standard copy fee across Maryland is $0.50 per page. If you need certified copies, the fee is $5.00 plus $0.50 per page. Exemplification copies, which carry a higher level of authentication, cost $10.00 plus $0.50 per page. Personal checks are generally not accepted at most Maryland courts, so bring cash, a money order, or check whether the clerk's office accepts other forms of payment when you call ahead.
You can request records in person at the courthouse, by mail, or by contacting the clerk's office directly. When making a mail request, include the full name of the party or parties, the case number if you have it, the approximate year the case was filed, and a description of the documents you need. The clerk will quote you a cost before sending anything. Once you receive the cost estimate, send payment and the clerk will mail the copies. It helps to be as specific as possible in your request to avoid delays.
Records may not be available right away in some situations. The clerk's office notes that delays can happen due to technical problems, bulk requests from other parties, active cases where files are in use, or files that have been moved to archived storage. If your request involves an older case, allow extra time for retrieval.
Note: Case Search shows summaries only; full document copies must be requested directly from the Garrett County Circuit Court clerk's office.
What Is Not Public in Garrett County Civil Records
Not all court records in Garrett County are open to the public. Maryland law restricts access to several categories of civil case records. Adoption records, juvenile case files, and CINA (Child in Need of Assistance) cases are sealed and not accessible to the general public. Mental health evaluation records, income tax returns submitted in court proceedings, and financial statements filed in support cases are also protected. Records involving disabled adults under certain proceedings are restricted as well.
If a civil case has been expunged or sealed by court order, it will not appear in Case Search and the clerk cannot release records from it without a court order allowing disclosure. A 2024 state law also requires that Failure to Pay Rent cases be automatically shielded if no judgment for possession was entered, so those cases may not be visible even if they were filed in Garrett County. If you believe a case exists but cannot find it, contact the clerk's office to ask whether it may be restricted.
